In 1949, the Church of the Nazarene found that there had been a decrease in mission funding. During the General  NMI Council meeting of that same year, Mary Elizabeth Vennum was charged with the mission of finding a new and  innovative way to raise additional money for land purchases and building construction needs for the Nazarene  Mission Field. She was on her train ride home when God spoke to her about a story found in Matthew 26 – the story  of Jesus being anointed with oil. “While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to  him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the  table.”  Jesus said of her gift, “I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has  done will also be told in memory of her.”  After considering that story and building upon it, Mrs. Vennum decided to encourage women to give up buying new  perfume or other personal luxuries and to instead donate those intended costs to World Missions (in the same way  that the woman gave her bottle of perfume to Jesus). For almost 70 years, Nazarenes have been “giving up a want  for a need” and through the semi-annual “Alabaster Offerings” (taken in February and September) have generated  more that $100 million dollars for land purchases and construction projects at over 5,600 sites throughout the  world.  The small boxes that have been collecting change throughout Nazarene homes provide a reminder to adults and  children alike to pray for those who are going to hear the Gospel message in the building that will be constructed  with the funds collected.  Newly designed Alabaster boxes and children’s boxes (both in packets of 25) may be ordered online from The  Foundry Publishing at thefoundrypublishing.com. Remember to take your Alabaster Offering this month!  ~Ruth Hasenauer District Mission Education Coordinator
